Guna Seed Multiplication Cooperative Union is a union established with the objective of addressing the seed supply challenges prevailing in the Zone and the Region at large. The Union was founded on April 11, 2016 (Miazia 3, 2008 E.C.) in Debre Tabor Town, the administrative capital of the South Gondar Administrative Zone of the Amhara National Regional State. At the time of its establishment, all rural districts (woredas) of South Gondar Zone provided financial support ranging from ETB 50,000 to ETB 90,000, having recognized the significant benefits of the Union to farmers. When the Union commenced its operations, it had an initial capital of ETB 450,000, three employees, 7,011 member primary cooperatives, and 1,630 member farmers, of whom 191 were women. At present, the Union has grown substantially and currently possesses a total capital of ETB 179,566,972.10, 65 employees (including 17 women), 31 member primary cooperatives, and 6,611 member farmers, of whom 548 are women. The Union is equipped with two standard warehouses with a combined storage capacity of 50,000 quintals of quality seed, two certified seed cleaning and processing machines, an onion packaging machine, teff threshing and maize shelling machines, a fully equipped standard seed laboratory, as well as field and transport vehicles. By entering into contractual agreements with member primary cooperatives—and, in areas where primary cooperatives are not established, with kebele administrations—the Union annually undertakes seed multiplication on farmers’ fields. Through the production and supply of various types of improved seed to areas within the Region and beyond, the Union continues to make a meaningful contribution to increasing agricultural production and productivity.Since its establishment, the Union has been engaged in the multiplication of improved seed for nine crop types comprising twenty-six varieties, namely: Maize: three varieties (BH-540, BH-546, and BH-661); Teff: two varieties (Quncho and Etsub); Malt Barley: five varieties (Holker, Traveler, Ibon, and Fatuma); Wheat: four varieties (Danda’a, Kekeba, Tay, and Ogolcho); Rice: three varieties (Shaga, NERICA-4, and Selam); Haricot Bean: three varieties (Tafach, Meten, and Awash-2); Niger Seed: two varieties (Ginche and Kuyu); Potato: six varieties (Belete, Gudene, Jalene, Shenkolla, Zengena, and Guassa); Onion: improved variety (Bombay Red). Overall, since the year of its establishment, the Union has multiplied quality seed on a total area of 10,348.45 hectares, producing and collecting more than 115,000 quintals of improved seed. Through value addition and effective distribution, the Union has successfully benefited more than 1,309,804 farmers, as well as various projects and institutions, by supplying different types of quality seed.
